Thing # 22 - R.E.A.D.S. and MyLibrarydv

Looked at both R.E.A.D.S. and MyLibrarydv and thought both definitely have a place in the library of today. Logged in to R.E.A.D.S., browsed around, and checked out some authors that I read. I'm not really into audio books - my commute isn't long enough. I did almost check out a book that was the Adobe format. I enjoyed looking at what is offered through MyLibrarydv. Saw some travel and some cooking videos that I might decide to look at when I have the time. This was a good way for me to become more familiar with both of these services so that I can better answer patron inquiries.

Thing #21 - You Tube "No Cookies in the Library"

Looking at You Tube was a lot of fun. Importing the video was pretty simple. Some really strange video clips there. I did see many library clips. Wouldn't it be fun to have something on our library website that we have made. Many different possibilities.

Thing # 20 - Web 2.0 sites

I scrolled through the list of winners and saw more than one site that I have used in working on the 24 Things. I clicked on a few and did a quick look around. I didn't register for anything that I hadn't already set up an account with as part of this project. I like to play games online so I checked out ArcaPlay, played a couple of games, and will probably return and create an account. I really enjoyed Flickr. I love being able to type in the names of places I have lived and visited and being able to find pictures. I think that Flickr and YouTube both could be used in posting images and videos to the library website. GoogleDocs could also be used by staff members working documents as part of a group project.

Thing # 19 - Social Networking

I have now explored the some of the different social networking sites. On My Space I looked at some the the library profiles, profiles of people my daughter knows, and author profiles. Since my daughter has a Facebook account, I didn't stay there long or set up an account. I did register with one of the other social networking sites but have taken the time to create a profile. Bookspoke looked interesting to me because I am a reader. I may decide to register there.

You definitely have access to more information as a member of these sites. I like that your profile can be private and that people must ask to be your friend. I'm not sure just how much I will use a social networking site but I do find the idea intriguing.

Thing # 18 - Online productivity

This is Tuesday afternoon, January 15, 2008. I am trying out Google Docs to see if I like how it works. So far so good. I think that being able to log in to my account from any computer anywhere could really be useful. Many of us who own home computers have information saved there and not accessible anywhere else - resumes, appointments, etc. Just think how this could be helpful. I can see myself using the calender feature to keep track of appointments. I also want to try Zoho Writer to see if there are any real differences. I created an account with Zoho Writer and checked it out. The templates available looked like something that could be useful. Took a quick look at Writeboard and ThinkFree Office. I didn't set up an account with either at this time. I can see options like these becoming more popular. To be able to create documents, spreadsheets, or presentations and have others in your group be able to access the information to add or edit seems so efficient. I am going to try and publish this to my blog. Compliments to editing. It worked. I was able to get this information from Google Docs to my blog.

Thing # 17 - Staff Wiki

I added an entry to the Services Available section of the staff wiki. It was easy but I would definitely want to study all of the information more before tackling a whole new page on my own.

Thing # 16 - Wikis

I enjoyed looking at the different wikis. The subject guides wiki on the SJCPL site supplied a lot of information. I definitely could see how a public wiki like this one would really help a patron.
I also really enjoyed the Book Lovers wiki that the Princeton Public Library has. A wiki like that would be great for any library. These were both public wikis. The wiki for our library is for staff only which seems to be a great way for staff the check on libraries policy/procedures that they are not sure of. (Sorry bad grammar) I guess we need to concentrate on the staff wiki before we try to create a public one.
